I often fail.” Nevertheless, writing gave him purpose, and, as he told me, “I’ve found that people remain hopeful so long as they have purpose.” It was also a way to control his anger. “We must all live with our faults, mistakes, poor decisions, cruelties great and small,” he wrote. “Those of us who can’t, ultimately don’t”—a reference to his suicide attempts. “I eventually came to terms with my own heart of darkness, and learned to live with it. The human condition is inherently dark, I think; to live is to suffer, due both to our actions and our inactions.
