To conclude let me use, rather than words, two pictures [34]. One (grainy, sorry) is of Tony with his wife Jill, herself a programmer, who was such a strong presence in his life. The other is of him at Munich airport, after a Marktoberdorff summer school, I think in August 2004. I had a rented car and had driven him back to the airport, all too happy to seize the opportunity of a long discussion on whether Dijkstra, in his attitude towards tests reflected in a famous pronouncement, was influenced by Popper’s discussions about the role of falsifiability in science. For some reason he had been gifted two umbrellas and for some other reason he had two hats. They did not fit into his luggage. I know that does not seem to make sense but somehow the agent had told him he could take everything with him on the plane. The opportunity of a picture of a double-hatted and doubly-umbrelled Tony (with the startled young boy in the background) was too good to miss. There is a lot of him in this snapshot: the humor hiding under the seriousness (or maybe the other way around), the acceptance of things as they are, the practicality and earthiness (why renounce any of your possessions?), the mix of apparent shyness and definite self-assurance, the willingness to put up with a bit of absurdity. We miss him.
